Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an enveloped, double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Hepadnaviridae family. Along with Hepatitis C virus (HCV), it is a major cause of blood-borne hepatitis. HBV infection can range from mild, asymptomatic forms to fulminant hepatitis and severe chronic liver disease, sometimes leading to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

To diagnose and classify hepatitis B infection, it’s essential to identify various serological markers across three stages of infection: incubation, acute phase, and recovery. The most crucial marker is Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), previously known as Australia antigen. HBsAg possesses a common “a” determinant across all viral subtypes and is immunologically divided into two subgroups (ay and ad). HBV has 10 main serotypes and 4 known HBsAg subtypes (ayw, ady, adw, ayr). HBsAg is detectable 2 to 4 weeks before abnormal ALT levels and 3 to 5 weeks before the onset of clinical symptoms.
