PROLACTIN
Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone with a molecular weight of 23 kDa which is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. Prolactin levels increase during pregnancy and after birth. Mental and physical stresses and hypoglycemia increase prolactin levels. Increased levels of prolactin in women and men result in menstrual disorders and weakening of sexual power. Increased level of this hormone is common in hypothalamus and pituitary tumors, stress, excitement and nervousness, surgeries, primary hypothyroidism and its decreased level is common in pituitary and hypopituitarism. Measurement of prolactin in infertility cases will be of high value.
