FSH

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 30 kDa which is secreted by the anterior pituitary cells. Secretion of this hormone is stimulated by Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). This hormone is formed by two chains, namely alpha and beta. Alfa chain is structurally quite similar to those of other TSH،LH،HCG hormones. In women, at the beginning of menstruation (follicular phase), FSH causes the maturity of ovarian follicles by affecting them and ovulation occurs upon increase of FSH in the middle of menstruation. At the beginning of menstruation, FSH level is significantly higher than the end of menstruation luteal phase. FSH level increases significantly in postmenopausal women due to lack of inhibitory effect of steroid hormones secreted by the ovaries. In men, this hormone stimulates spermatogenesis. FSH measurement is important in diagnosing the failure of hypothalamic pituitary and gonads and it will be also useful in differential diagnosis of diseases related to their increase and/or decrease.
