LH
LHTEINIZING (LH) is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 30 kDa which is secreted by  the anterior lobe of pituitary. Secretion of this hormone is stimulated by the releasing hormone (GnRH) which is secreted by hypothalamus. LH levels in women change during menstruation, in the manner that its level is low in the beginning (follicular phase) and at the end of menstruation (luteal phase). Ovulation happens by the increase of this hormone in the middle of menstruation. In postmenopausal women, LH level increases due to lack of inhibitory effect of steroid hormones secreted by the ovaries. In women, LH hormone results in ovulation, growth of corpus luteum and stimulated secretion of progesterone. Stimulation of LH hormone in men results in             synthesis of testosterone and stimulation of spermatogenesis. Measurement of LH level is important in diagnosing the failure of the hypothalamic pituitary and gonads. It will be also useful in differential diagnosis of diseases related to their increase and/or decrease.
